To buy or not to buy? Oh how I love my fabric softener.
I found tons of recipes on laundry detergent. Not so many on fabric softener.
I found a couple using a combination of things including any ol' brand of hair conditioner. However, I think that defeats the "all natural" purpose. I can't pronounce any of the ingredients in conditioner....so, I'm pretty sure it's not naturally occurring. I'm
The most often found recipe was using- vinegar.
eeiiiigg
{that was my disgusted sound}
Vinegar just smells horrible!
I can't deal with it. I kept thinking to myself . Are there really people out there using this fabric softener and if so I do not want to be trapped in the same room as them.
............until...........
I found THIS site . Turns out vinegar is a deoderizer and after vinegar dries there is no smell. hhmm.. interesting. Why no other site never tells you that, I'm not sure. Maybe I'm the only one who shivers at the thought of the smell....
back on topic:
So, I tested it out. While doing so I was thinking, "my blog readers better really appreciate me walking around smelling like pickle"
It works! It actually works and doesn't smell! I couldn't believe it when I pulled the clothes out of the dryer and they smelled wonderfully fresh and felt unbelievabley soft. interesting.
I used my Downy ball (easily found at Wal-mart or other large retailers) filled the vinegar half way up to the "fill" line then filled it the rest of the way up to the "fill" line with water.
done. easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Fyi: the above mentioned, Organizehome.com is my new FAVorite goto site. You have to check it out. There are tons of great tips, recipes, motivational words. Be sure to stop over and see what I mean!
thanks for the handy tip, and for saying "easy peasy lemon squeezy".. I love that line.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I will try the straight vinegar and see how it works for us. I love the price for sure. i will check out the website also.
ReplyDeleteVinegar is the best! I've been using it for well over a year now as my fabric softener and it works like a charm. I will never go back to the nasty chemical-y fabric softeners at the store. Have you tried using vinegar in place of Windex yet? I use a 50/50 concoction of water and vinegar in a spray bottle for cleaning windows, mirrors, and countertops. Can't beat that either. :)
ReplyDeleteAnd here's something hardcore when it comes to vinegar: using apple cider vinegar as a conditioner and detangler. I finally worked up the nerve to try it a few weeks ago and it too works! I washed my hair with a bar of good ol' Ivory soap then did several rinses of water and apple cider vinegar (abt. 4c. water and 1/4 c. ACV per rinse--I was using a quart yogurt container.) Now, the smell will open up your sinuses and the vinegar scent will linger while your hair is still damp, but once your hair dries, the fragrance disappears and your hair is super-soft and full of volume. I don't do this everytime I wash my hair but I try for 2-3 times a week. I notice my hair stays cleaner in between washes as well.
Wow, sorry for the super-long comment on vinegar (of all things!!) but it's amazing how this all-natural, everyday item can be used for so many purposes. Good for you for trying it!
