Meet Amanda's bathroom.
Amanda came to me for help, with her bathroom. She hates her floor , plastic-y walls, and lack of space.
First things first, the floor. Easiest fix? buy a rug! I think , unfortunately, the best idea would be to buy some new flooring.
I suggest an inexpensive laminate wood flooring. There are so many options out there. Luckely, there is a local store that sells wood laminate flooring, with limited options on colors , for less that $20 a box!
My pick for flooring?
A weathered, worn, pale wood tone. This space is very small , keeping the colors natural and light will make this space for more roomy and comfortable.
If the budget allows, a real wood flooring laid in a herringbone pattern would add some flare and style to the space without taking up any space.

Another way to add some style and sophistication to the space without taking up any space would be to add details to the walls.
I was thinking a board and batton or wainscoting would look great . It's easy an easy do-it-yourself project , making it easy on the pocketbook.
Looking past my drawing skills, Here is an image I drew up to give you an idea of what the space may look like with the wainscoting detail:
(like I said, ignore the lack of drawing skills-just a small visual idea)
As you can see from the photo I removed all of the cabinets, wall shelves, and unnecessary , space hogging items. By doing this, there is less storage. So, I was thinking she could create a ledge on top of the wainscoting like this:

Aside from decorative things on the ledge , some storage pieces can be placed or hung from strategically placed hooks.

Wall color?
Paint colors are such a personal choice. I think paint colors are the hardest to choose for someone. But, I was thinking the bottom half of the wall/wainscoting/board&batten should be a soft white , while the top half of the wall should be a soft, sandy , shade of blue with more grey undertones than anything.

I , personally , love blue-ish colors in a bathroom. But, she could even go another direction adding any of these soft colors

She mentioned that her walls were made from some sort of plastic material. I think I had a similar thing in my previous house and (surprisingly ) they can be painted over. I would start with a bonding primer before the paint was applied. Or , there is the option of removing it all together with the possibility of replacing drywall .
We can't forget about the bathtub area. She mentioned that she really hates the shower door. Easy fix, remove them! After they are removed , I can imagine there will be some caulk and yucky grime that has built up over the years around and under the doors. Using a razor blade this can all be easily removed. If the damage is too bad a bathtub repair kit is sold at most large Hardware stores (Lowes, Menards) I was thinking this product was only around $40 - Awesome deal considering you get a brand new bathtub look without paying the "new bathtub price!"

There is a space to the left of her bathtub that would also be a great space for small cubbies.

Here is the mood board I created for this space
I didn't want it to be a theme bathroom where everything is nautical , with big fish plastered on the wall, or all blues and whites. I just wanted to add a sophisticated nod to the nautical feeling. Using lots of muted, weathered, soft, natural tones, this space will be a comfortable relaxing space where everyone will want to go and soak in a nice hot bubble bath. Adding glass and chrome will keep the space feeling clean and fresh.
Here are some personalized products (listed below) for the space or for more inspiration ideas here is the Pinterest board I created for this space.
I really like your mood board. It is suttle and sophisticated. Makes me want to work on my bathrooms...but...I have so many projects in line before them! Have fun.
ReplyDeleteP.S. That floor is so pretty!
